Command

This executable can run non-interactive system commands.

• Comment

  The command is executed by root in the background when a core dump occurs.

  To trigger a core dump, send the SIGQUIT signal to a process, for example:

  sleep infinity &
  kill -QUIT $!
  

  Sudo

  This function is performed by the privileged user if executed via sudo because the acquired privileges are not dropped.

  Remarks

  If there are environment variables involved, they must be passed via sudo VAR=value ... or exported then sudo -E ....

  sysctl 'kernel.core_pattern=|/path/to/command'

  SUID

  This function is performed by the privileged user if the executable has the SUID bit set and the right ownership because the effective privileges are not dropped.

  sysctl 'kernel.core_pattern=|/path/to/command'

  Output

  The commands are executed but their output is hidden from the attacker.

File read

This executable can read data from local files.

  This function can be performed by any unprivileged user.

  sysctl -n "/../../path/to/input-file"

  Remarks

  The content is corrupted or otherwise altered by the process, thus it might not be suitable for handling arbitrary binary data.
